Some disasters seem just too enormous to grasp. Every version of the U.N. climate change report is more dire and more certain about the effects of climate change. The final report, released Friday (N.Y. Times, L.A. Times), begs for help protecting the poor nations most at risk from flooding, drought and disease. It’s hard to imagine that Exxon will find a scientist willing to dispute the U.N. conclusions, yet I doubt its executives will express regret for their earlier campaign to dig up climate-changer deniers and get them published.
The costs of just the dikes, bridges and other infrastructure needed to save populations and economies will, of course, dwarf the billions in record profit pulled in by Big Oil as it dragged its collective feet on admitting the certainty of this creeping disaster.
