UC Berkeley’s faculty members could learn something from their students. Unlike the faculty senate’s toothless compromise resolution about the proposed $500 million deal with oil giant BP that could transform the campus into the latest outpost of Big Oil U. — "UCBP" — the student senate’s resolution means something.
The Associated Students of the University of California Senate passed a resolution calling for an external review of the deal by experts in ethics, intellectual property rights, public-private conflicts of interest and the social and environmental impacts of the research.
The students want the review to be published before the administration signs the deal.
They call on the administration to commit to an open and transparent process in drafting the BP deal and urge the administration not to sign until their concerns are met.
I still want the UC Regents to exercise their responsibility and review the deal. It ought to be discussed at the meeting scheduled for May 16-17 at UCSF.
Meantime, kudos to the faculty. You taught your students well. To bad it wasn’t by example.
